Provide Opportunities for Children to Participate in Creativity and Imaginative Play at Home

Children have the ability to use their imagination and be creative. When provided with the chance, they can make interesting creations. This can start when they are young. As a parent, you can have a variety of materials for your children to use. You can inspire ideas by reading books to your kids or taking them to fun places. Children often copy what they see and hear so exposing them to appropriate content and places will motivate them to create positive things.

There are many materials you can have in your home  to make creativity and imaginative play fun for your kids. You can use cardboard boxes that you received from an online delivery. Sometimes those boxes have a long sheet of brown paper or bubble wrap, which is fun for kids to use too. My children are always asking me if they can keep these items so they can make something with them.

It's nice to have paper, child-safety scissors, markers, crayons, glue, and tape on hand. The Dollar Store and Walmart are great places to purchase these items at a reasonable price. If you have a toddler, please remember to monitor them carefully since they like to put small objects in their mouth at this age. You can find crafts online or in stores for your kids to do. But it’s also fun for them to come up with their own ideas. And you will find that the more that you read to your kids or that they read independently, the more creative they will be.

The picture used in this blog post was created by one of my kids who loves sports and is excited about the FIFA World Cup. This child came up with this idea on their own using sheets of copy paper, markers, crayons, and tape to make the soccer field. Then toy characters and a mini ball were placed on the field along with the bleachers from the Rummikub tile stands. It was awesome to see in person!

One of my children wants to be a teacher. So this child uses large covered plastic containers as desks/tables, dolls, stuffed animals, dry-erase boards, and other items to set up a classroom. Index cards were used to make name tags, until I purchased some real name tags as a gift. A bulletin board was made with cardboard and a long sheet of brown paper from a delivery box. It’s so fun to see the creativity and imagination use!

It's fun for kids when they have toys to play with at home. My kids love to pretend they have their own restaurant using pretend food and kitchen toys. They also like to play doctor’s office and  resort/hotel using pretend play toys. It’s good to have toys that can be used for a variety of purposes so they can use their minds and have fun playing. Many times when we come back from staying at a nice resort or restaurant with delicious food, they like to imitate the experience with their toys and other household items. My husband and I pretend like we are guests at their hotel or restaurant and they love it when we “check in and enjoy the experience”.

I hope you are encouraged to motivate creativity and imaginative play in your kids. The Lord has blessed them with a mind to use in order to be creative so that they can glorify Him in all that they do. Have fun watching your kids be creative!
