Teaching Your Children How to Have Good Work Ethic
Our children are our future leaders. As they grow up and we become elderly, they will be the ones responsible for leading and working in jobs. These children of this generation will be future government officials, doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, cleaners, mechanics, police officers, entrepreneurs, etc. They will need to acquire good work ethic to align with their talent in order to be successful when they reach the age to where they will need to obtain an occupation.
When I was an elementary school classroom teacher, I always admired the parents who took the time to work with their children to ensure they were putting in the effort necessary to complete their tasks. Over the years I have studied early childhood education and elementary education as well as researching a lot about child development. I have learned that it’s important to teach good habits early to children, starting when they are really little.
Children need to understand the importance of having good work ethic when it comes to school work, professional work, and taking care of the home. They must learn and practice this when they are little so that they continue as they grow into adulthood. It’s common in society to give up when situations get hard, but that is not a good thing. Yes, of course there are times when certain jobs or tasks may not be a good fit. But many times we have to just be strong and get through challenges instead of quitting. For example, deciding that you will not keep your house clean because it’s hard to keep up with is not a wise choice. Deciding to quit would mean living in an uncomfortable place which will then affect you and your family’s mental and physical health in a negative way. Teaching kids about perseverance is so important.
One point I think children really need to learn when it comes to work ethic is that they might have to do a task more than one time before getting it right. It will not always be done correctly the first time. For example, a child may have a reading comprehension assignment. He or she might have to read the passage 3 times before they are able to accurately answer the questions. This is something children need to repeatedly be reminded of. Here is another example. A child might be growing a garden at home. But he or she must learn that it will take time for the garden to grow. The child will have to water and take care of the plants each day and patiently wait for it to grow. It takes time and will not happen quickly.
We can positively help our children learn that there is no magic to work ethic. To be successful in school requires lots of practice and studying. To keep a clean home requires daily cleaning each day. None of this comes easy, but the rewards are nice. It feels good to receive a great report card. It feels good to live in a clean and orderly home. It feels good to receive your pay check after working hard at your job.
